Do you know what your lunch money is buying?

We have several students in the older grades who have permission to sign themselves out and purchase their lunch from some of the local food establishments. This is a great way for students to learn how to independently manage in their environment, needs, and finances...however...we have noticed that there are several students in this group who are choosing their dining experience at the Dollar Store candy aisle.

If your child is has permission to leave the premises to purchase their lunch, please review some healthy choices within the school's vicinity.

A Message From Our Trustee

In November, about 1,000 students, staff members and community partners came together from across the Board to form a Ring of Peace and stand together against hate, discrimination and intolerance. The student speakers at the event shared meaningful messages about the importance of feeling welcome, valued and respected.

At York Region District School Board, we are committed to listening to the voices of our students and communities. We will continue working with our school communities to ensure our schools provide safe, welcoming and inclusive environments for everyone.

Last month, our annual Quest conference brought together educators from across Ontario, Canada and around the world to share, learn and discuss how to foster well-being in schools. Some of the themes covered included equity and inclusivity, and safe and caring environments.

It was a wonderful opportunity to learn more about some of the positive things happening in our own schools and other districts. In recent months, we have had several international visitors come to our system and schools to learn more about the work in our system to support student achievement and well-being, including Qatar, the Netherlands, Texas and the United Kingdom.

We are pleased to have these opportunities to continue highlighting and sharing the great things happening in our schools thanks to our outstanding students, staff members, families and community partners. Your engagement makes a difference in our schools and I encourage you to continue getting involved in the life of your child’s school.

As we enter the holiday season, I am once again impressed by the generosity of our school communities and our students’ commitment to helping others.

Best wishes to everyone for a safe and happy holiday season and a wonderful start to 2018.

Inclement Weather Day Procedures

In the event of a large snowfall or icy precipitation that makes driving unsafe, the board may call for bus cancellations early before the start of the school day. These bus cancellations are communicated through local media outlets, the Student Transportation Services website, the Board’s website and Twitter account and on the Board and school’s voicemail recording.

Parents should use their best judgment to decide whether or not to send their child(ren) to school when buses are cancelled and schools remain open.

In accordance with the Safe Arrivals and Departures policy and procedure, the school will not be following up on absences of students who are bussed on Board declared inclement weather days, and bus parents are responsible for making arrangements to have their child(ren) picked up at the end of the school day on days when school buses are cancelled in accordance with the school’s safe departures protocol.

Winter Concert this Thursday!

The Winter Concert is fast approaching!

All JRPS students have been working very hard to prepare for the performance this Thursday, December 14, 2017 at Markville S.S. at 7:00 pm. A reminder that students are asked to arrive to their holding rooms between 6:30 – 6:45pm dressed in a white top and black bottoms unless their teacher has noted otherwise. For a safe dismissal, please pick up your child(ren) from their holding rooms at the end of concert. We look forward to seeing you there!

Light refreshments organized by school council will be available after the show. Please let us know if you are able to bring an item to contribute to the refreshment table.
