Message From Our Trustee

I hope everyone has had a great start to the second half of the school year. Over the past few months, I have had an opportunity to connect with families, students, staff members and with our broader community. I have seen a lot of exciting opportunities for students to explore their interests, celebrate their identities, and develop skills and knowledge that will benefit them in the future.

Many students are participating in skills competitions or other events where they problem-solve, innovate, collaborate and further develop their technical skills. Students compete in robotics, construction, hairdressing, transportation, 3D animation and much more. These events are among the many options available to help students explore different careers and pathways, and gain valuable experience. We are grateful for the support of community partners in helping to provide these great learning opportunities to our students.

I also want to express my appreciation to our broader school community. One of the priorities in our Multi-Year Strategic Plan is to build collaborative relationships. The relationships that our schools have with families is so important. There are many different ways you can be involved - talking to your child’s teacher, asking your child about homework, or volunteering on a field trip or the school council. Your contributions make a difference to your child’s success and to the success of our schools.

I hope everyone has an enjoyable March Break.

February Spirit Day Thursday, Feb 28

February 28th is our Colour House Spirit Day. Earlier this month, a note went home with all students identifying the "house" to which they have been assigned. Students are encouraged to dress in their house colours to show their spirit and earn a point for their colour house.

Pink Shirt Day February 27th

February 27 is Pink Shirt Day!

The focus for 2019 is cyberbullying

https://www.pinkshirtday.ca/

The dawn of social media brought with it a whole new way to interact, communicate, and even bully. But in this digital world where filtered photos and crafted messages can be posted in an instant, it often takes more time and effort to say something mean than it does to say something nice. Kindness requires no manipulation, no focusing on the negatives, and no filtering of yourself. It’s simply, truly nice. For social media users, we want them to THINK before they post.

We want them to ask themselves if it is:

True,

Helpful,

Inspiring,

Necessary and

KIND

Let’s all remember to wear pink on Wednesday in support of anti-cyberbullying.

Upcoming Author Visit

On Thursday, February 28th, Joanne George, author of "Smiley - A Journey of Love", will be coming to James Robinson PS to present to all of our students.  Joanne's book tells about a special dog named Smiley who was born without eyes, but was able to become a therapy dog and share joy with people.  This book was the 2018 Silver Birch Express Award recipient.  We look forward to welcoming Ms. George and hearing all about seeing with our hearts.

School Council Fundraising and parent support has allowed us to bring this experience to our students.

If families are interested in purchasing their own copy of "Smiley" by Joanne George, they will be available on Thursday for $20.  Every student who purchases a book will have it signed by the author during her visit.

Colour Houses

Our student led Spirit Team has divided the school into four colour houses (BlueGreenPurple, and Orange) in the spirit of friendly competition on spirit days, play days, and other special events.

All staff and students across the grades have been randomly assigned a colour house. A slip of paper will be coming home this week indicating your child's randomly assigned colour house.

Spirit Days are the last day of each month; on the same day as our Leader by Example Assemblies.
